Exactly how to find a job in Asheville can be challenging.  It’s challenging in every city in America, however, it is not impossible. You can find an excellent job that you find interesting, challenging and love.

How to find a job in Asheville is almost the same as finding that special someone you want to spend time with.  When you meet a person that you really like, what do you do?  You pursue them, right?  If you’re smart,  you may want to research that person by looking at the myriad of social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and others.  It would be imperative for you to make sure you were not pursuing a psycho, right?  Of course!   So, if you are willing to pursue and research a potential life partner, why not be willing to pursue a career with just as much interest, research, and passion?  No one wants to pursue a disastrous relationship. Stage 1: Skills and personality assessment:
Most people do not take the time to assess their skills or personality type.  This is a critical part of the preparation.  Doing an assessment will help you understand what is most important to you and what kind of job will bring you fulfillment. Part of the personal assessment is asking a lot of questions and taking the free online test for skills and personality type.  The best people to ask questions to are your friends and family.  Sometimes they know you the better than you know you. You may be surprised how much insight they can provide. Ask them what they think you do best and what makes you happy.  Getting feedback from them may really give you more confidence to pursue your new career choices.




Stage 2: What Education or Special Training is Necessary:
Should you go back to school? Well, yes, if you can. Did you know that according to an article in USA Today that the earnings gap between college grads and everyone else has reached its widest point? College graduates, on average, earned 56% more than high school grads in 2015.  Skills growth is critical and we highly encourage all able-bodied individuals to attain a college degree. If this is not something you are able to do, then at the least get certified or just take a refresher course in the areas of interest.  With so many online college options, you have total access to anything and everything.  Ramping up your education and training on any level is good. There are several online degrees and certification programs to choose from. Here are just a few:  AB Tech and UNC online, South College, University of Phoenix. Once you have completed the self-assessment stage, you should know what you need to pursue on an educational level.  There is plenty of access to financing your education. CFNC or Tuition Funding is a good place to start when looking at financing your education.

Stage 3: Create an amazing social media profile and excellent resume:
Creating an amazing profile is very important. Having a professional LinkedIn page is a powerful way to highlight your strengths and experience.  Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat accounts are fun, but with more and more employers conducting social media checks, you will need to keep your private life, private.  Better yet, don’t post anything on these pages that will compromise your potential employment opportunities. You will also need to put together more than one professional resume and cover letter. Why? Because not all jobs are created equal.  If you want to find a job that is tailored to your specific skills, then you will need to tailor your resume to that job.

Did you know recruiters spend an average of six (6) seconds reviewing individual resumes?  Only six seconds!  That means if your opening statement and work experience don’t match what they’re looking for….you’re out!  It should be tailored to the companies and job titles(s) you are targeting.  Writing a good resume needs to be very strategic and perfect.  That is why writing a resume takes time and careful study. Once you complete and perfect your resume and cover letters you are ready to move on to the next stage….targeting and networking.

Stage 4: Targeting and Networking:
Researching and finding the right company to target is so important. It takes a lot of searching and networking with professionals in the industry you are targeting.  It important to find and attend networking events in and around the Asheville area and exploring companies and employer’s profiles on LinkedIn.  If you can get in front of the potential employer that is half the battle.  There are several ways to plan your networking strategies.




Stage 5: Apply to the job:
Applying for the job is the easy part.  Finding an excellent job in Asheville can only be done if you have done the self-assessment, researched the education you need, networked yourself to death and written an excellent resume and cover letter and created a Social Media Persona that sells the best you…..then you will be totally equipped to get it done. You will be well prepared to go about your search in a methodical way.  The hardest part is following up and perseverance.  Don’t give up. You must pursue and conquer.
